Water All Around Us–Lessons & More!

Although water is all around us, this vital resource needs protection. Teach your students about water, and how they can help conserve it with the lessons in the Next Step Water Unit. Hands-on learning through ready-to-go activities that are content-rich AND fun!

Begin by going on a water scavenger hunt. Play a game to simulate the water cycle. Create an edible model of the water beneath our feet. Connect the lessons to current events that are in the  local news like this, this, and this. The Next Step water lessons are linked to specific grade-level Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), but can be easily adapted for very young and even adult students! Use the lessons for project-based learning unit or as a service learning project.

Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink! This line from the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Coleridge characterizes anything that seems to be abundant but is unusable. As the climate changes, one of our most serious concerns is the preservation of clean, drinkable water. Young people across the world are raising their voices to create change on issues from gun control to climate change. Empower your students to make a positive impact!
